Type Locality and Naming

The type section, Niushan section, is located at the Qixian Township, Linqu County. Geographical coordinates: 36°25′N, 118°35′E (GPS). It was named by the First Petroleum Survey Exploration Brigade, Ministry of Geology, in 1960.


Lithology and Thickness

It is a combination of gray-black basalt, stomatal basalt, red mudstone, gray-white sandstone, and glutenite. In the type section, its thickness is 210m; and in the distribution area, its thickness is 95–241m.

Relationships and Distribution

Lower contact

It overlies the Wutu Gr (Wutu Fm) in conformable contact (although older Chinese lexicon strat chart implies a major disconformity between early Eocene Wutu Fm and early Miocene Niushan Fm. Next older unit indicated in this region below a disconformity is the Huangzhuang Fm.

Upper contact

The unconformity underlies the overlying Shanwang Fm, and when the upper Shanwang Fm is missing, it is in parallel unconformity contact with the Yaoshan Fm.

Regional extent

It is distributed in Linqu, Changle, Anqiu and Yishui and the adjacent area.
